Course Planner

Built with Remix · TypeScript · PostgreSQL

Course Planner helps UBC Okanagan students plan a degree and compare weekly timetables. It brings course choices, prerequisites, and scheduling into one place, so students can explore their options before registering.

Build a plan that fits

Students drag courses across terms in a degree map, with prerequisite and corequisite checks to flag problems. A term’s courses can then go to the scheduler, which finds conflict-free section combinations that match the student’s preferences.

Students can save alternative plans and compare schedules. Registration happens separately in Workday.

Testing the advice with AdvisingBench

The project’s course-advising research explores answers grounded in official course information. The evaluated chatbot retrieves course descriptions, prerequisites, restrictions, and program requirements using PostgreSQL and pgvector, then passes that material to Gemini.

AdvisingBench tests the adviser against 55 questions with expert-validated reference answers. An LLM-as-a-judge evaluation checks relevance, faithfulness to the actual retrieved context, and correctness against the reference answers.

The evaluation of 53 responses found six retrieval failures and three cases of invented details, distinguishing problems finding information from errors composing an answer. Ronit Buti and Abdallah Mohamed describe the research in their WCCCE 2026 paper.
